Photographers always get asked “what kind of photography do you do?” I cannot define or limit my style into a specific type. Just when I think I have narrowed it down, I find a new form or style and I immerse myself. As an artist, I am constantly learning and evolving and I hope that never stops. For me, photography is a way to connect with people and share stories or experiences that can often go untold. It is also about seeing something that speaks to me and wanting to capture it with my lens. Sometimes it is a courageous person standing up for justice. Sometimes it is the way sun light creates clean lines. Sometimes it is a piece of trash on the side of the road. But it is always art and it always teaches me something.

Making art can be a form of resistance; such as creating beauty or finding meaning when it is otherwise hard to do. My intention is to always give back more than I receive. Sometimes my work will matter to others, sometimes it will matter to me. It just has to matter in order for me to keep at it. To all who have been in front of my lens, thank you for your trust and vulnerability. Your stories deserve to be told and it is my greatest honor to share them.

My Approach

I do not consider myself a “professional” photographer as far as how I make a living. For some, that works well. For me, photography is a passion, a visual way of sharing experiences. I photograph images that inspire me and force me outside of my comfort zone. I donate my time to certain projects and causes because I believe Art should be accessible. I also believe that when an individual or collective experience has been silenced, we have a responsibility to carry it forward in whatever ways we can.

Preferred tools for photography

It took me a long time to realize that taking pictures doesn’t have to be complicated. You don’t need expensive equipment or studio set ups. I am overwhelmed by most of it. Honestly, some of the best photos I have taken are with my iPhone! However, variety has it’s place. In such a fast paced digital world, I love the sound and slow down that film photography produces.

My images are either digital, 35mm, or medium format. Current cameras include: Pentax 67ii, Canon AE-1, Hasselblad 500cm, Canon DSLR & Sigma Art lens series. Favorite film stocks: Kodak Gold 200, Ilford HP5, Ilford Delta 3200, Portra 400.
